The music of flutist Yukari and drummer Carlo Costa draws inspiration from the ancient roots, as well as the intrinsic limitations of their respective instruments. The idea is to both celebrate and challenge the different practices and roles that both instruments have in various musical traditions. Their repertory includes improvisations and original compositions by both members of the duo. Their music has a rather wide range, from fiery to quiet and withdrawn, but overall it retains a meditational quality.

Improvisation #4
Flutist Yukari has been gaining recognition within New York City’s music community as an innovative improviser. Now part of Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music label, Yukari is also quickly establishing herself as a uniquely gifted composer with a knack for hybridization – fusing world music, classical, chamber and  modern Jazz establishing a sound which is very much her own. Her CD “Dreams” on Inner Circle Music features Ben Monder, Thomas Morgan, Greg Hutchinson, Leon Gruenbaum and Greg Osby.http://www.yukariflute.com/shapeimage_6_link_0

“(...) The overall effect is like a slightly disorienting dream with images moving in slow motion. The music has a somewhat ritualistic vibe as if it is accompanying a ceremony of some sort. It takes some time and patience to fully absorb what is unique and special about this disc but well worth the journey.” (Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery, April 2011)http://search2.downtownmusicgallery.com/lookup.cgi?item=2011_04_21_23_41_19shapeimage_10_link_0
Crepuscular Activity Press and Reviews
“(...)The overall result is quite welcoming and inviting, slow and meditative, eery at times, because of its high level of abstraction like you can expect from Japanese music : less is more. Some parts, and especially the beautiful "Black Pond", are really impressive...” (Stef Gijssels, Free Jazz Blog, June, 2011)http://freejazz-stef.blogspot.com/shapeimage_12_link_0

“Whether you might consider Carlo Costa’s Crepuscular Activity to be free jazz, minimalism, horizontal music, indie classical or just plain creepy, it’s a GREAT late-night album, a must-own for devotees of dark sounds. (...) Their slowly shifting soundscapes balance suspenseful stillness with slightly more animated passages, best experienced as a whole with the lights out...” (Alan Young, Lucid Culture, August 2011)http://lucidculture.wordpress.com/2011/08/10/crepuscular/shapeimage_14_link_0
“... The opening “Sea Breezes” joins shakuhachi-like alto flute with bamboo rustle and brushy patter, yet exhibits an extraordinary amount of tension. The disc’s tour de force is the 14-minute centerpiece “Black Pond” and its repeating glockenspiel figure, gradually abstracted around measured breath lines or refracting from gentle stair steps. Composed in three movements, its stark simplicity is extremely interesting while steering quite clear of ‘reductionist’ improvisational approaches. Certainly in the music of Carlo Costa and his collaborators, ‘less’ is both a path to freedom and structure.” (Clifford Allen, The New York City Jazz Record, September 2011)http://nycjazzrecord.com/shapeimage_15_link_0
